Poland is the fourth largest egg producer in the European Union, after France, Spain and Germany, with 14%. share in EU production. In 2022, the national production of table eggs amounted to 10.1 billion pieces. The development of this sector is driven by export demand – the National Center for Agriculture Support told PAP.
In the structure of production volume, table eggs constitute 85% and 15%. falls on hatching eggs. In the years 2018-2022, the annual production of chicken eggs for consumption and hatching ranged from 11.0 billion pieces to 12.1 billion pieces. In 2022, 10.1 billion pieces of table eggs were produced in Poland, compared to 9.3 billion pieces in 2021.
According to the KOWR Analysis and Strategy Office, most chicken egg hatching farms are located in the Greater Poland and Masovian Voivodeships. The supply of table eggs from these two regions accounts for 62%. entire domestic production.
Poland is one of the largest egg exporters in the EU
Egg production in our country is much higher than the national demand, which is why Poland is one of the largest exporters of this product in the EU. The main sales market is the EU, hence the demand situation on the Community market determines the size of Polish exports to the greatest extent – emphasized KOWR.
After a decline in egg exports in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, in 2022 and 2023 foreign sales of this product returned to a level exceeding 200,000. tone. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance, 215,000 were sold abroad in 2023. tons of eggs compared to 221 thousand tons in 2022.
KOWR data shows that egg sales to the EU market in 2023 amounted to 188,000. tons for the amount of EUR 366 million, which constituted 88%. volume and 85 percent revenues from domestic exports of this product. The largest revenues were obtained from the export of eggs to the market of Germany (89 million euros – 45 thousand tons), the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and France. The largest non-EU recipient of chicken eggs was Great Britain (EUR 50 million – 21 thousand tons).
The scale of egg imports to Poland is relatively small compared to the export volume, but in 2021-2023 an increase in imports was recorded – noted KOWR. In 2023, 19.5 thousand were imported into the country. tons of eggs worth approximately EUR 37 million, by 79 percent more than a year earlier. The main suppliers of chicken eggs to Poland were EU countries and Ukraine. In 2023, 9.5 thousand were imported from Ukraine to Poland. tons of eggs (49% share in imports), over 3 times more than in 2022.
Egg consumption in Poland in 2018-2021 ranged from 156-159 pieces per inhabitant per year. In 2022, egg consumption decreased to 152 pieces (by 4%). However, the consumption level was significantly lower than in the early 2000s, when consumption exceeded 200 pieces per year – note KOWR experts.
Global production of chicken eggs from 2022 remains at approximately 87 million tonnes. The world’s largest producer of chicken eggs is China, which in 2022 supplied approximately 27%. global supply.
