Horsch 3 FX: the no-till veteran

This cultivator started a new era in no-till farming in Europe. At Agrotech we could see Terrano 3FX, a classic that has been doing just as well for 26 years.

The Horsch company is known for creating trends in agriculture, one of its products that made a big stir is the Horsch 3 FX universal cultivator. As the legend goes, it was created because the two-bar cultivators produced did not meet farmers’ expectations. So Horsch decided to add a third beam and three additional loosening legs. It turned out to be a bull’s-eye. On many farms it is a basic tool for soil processing, both shallow and deep.

Classic

I don’t know if the machines can be called classics, but if so, the Terrano 3 FX certainly belongs to that group.

A classic awaits us. A machine that dominates the universal and no-plough cultivation market. Terrano 3FX, one of the oldest machines produced by Horsch. In an unchanged design for almost 26 years. – this is what Łukasz Stoma from Horsch says about the cultivator

A role model for others

As I have already mentioned, the machine has three beams and has 10 loosening teeth spaced 30 cm apart.

Behind the teeth there is a row of leveling discs suspended on the machine shaft, which facilitates their adjustment. Behind them there is a consolidating roller; the farmer can choose from 11 types of rollers.

The ground clearance under the frame is 85 cm, and the release of the TerraGrip protection is 500 kg. The working depth is regulated on clips, and the roller suspension itself causes it to also press the tractor to the ground. It is on the basis of this cultivator that numerous other designs were created.

A wide selection of accessories

As befits a universal cultivator, it has a lot of accessories to choose from. Thanks to this, it can be used for both very shallow and deep cultivation up to 30 cm. The basic working elements are chisels and 8 cm wide mouldboards. You can add 15 cm wide side cutters to them. They can be adjusted vertically and if we want to work shallowly, just lower them relative to the chisel. You can also use wider 10 cm coulters or very wide so-called “goose foot” coulters, 32 cm wide.

If we want to work deeply and mix less, we can use narrow working elements, 4 cm wide, or if we do not want to mix at all, use ULD teeth of the same width.

A distribution head can also be mounted on the cultivator, and coulters for fertilizer distribution behind the legs. If we want to spread catch crops, we can install a catch crop seeder on the machine – it will be sown just in front of the consolidating roller.
