About 20 thousand Spanish farmers joined protests on Thursday against what they consider to be inappropriate policies of the government of Pedro Sanchez and the European Union authorities towards the Spanish agricultural sector.
The largest demonstrations, including roadblocks, are taking place in the autonomous communities of Andalusia, in the south of the country, and in Castile and León, in the west. Farmers organized numerous blockades in Leon, as well as on the access roads to this city, which led to traffic paralysis there on Thursday afternoon.
Against the EC’s policy
The organizers of the protest, representing several industry organizations, claim that the European Commission pursues a policy that is “unfavorable” to European agricultural producers, “fostering unfair competition from outside the European Union.”
Similar slogans are also put forward by farmers from Andalusia, who blocked several roads in the area of Seville and Huelva on Thursday.
Effects of drought
The largest protest of Andalusian farmers takes place on Thursday in the center of Seville. Over 15,000 people take part in it. Spanish agricultural producers.
The main postulate and demand of farmers towards the cabinet of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is to improve the water supply system irrigating farmlands in Andalusia. Protesters say the center-left government has done little to find a solution for increasingly drought-affected farmers in southwestern Spain. (PAP)
