Spring means more work in the field, but also tidying up, tidying up and checking if things are not too cluttered. Many farmers get rid of scrap lying on their farms at this time. What are the prices at purchases? After many months of stabilization in price lists, has scrap metal finally become more expensive?
No one expects such price jumps as in 2022, but spring, when traffic in scrap yards increases significantly, often means price increases. What else can change the amounts determined at purchases? Inflation, situation on the steel market, geopolitics. Even though the conflicts are not subsiding, the market has become accustomed to them and for now there are no major changes in scrap prices.
Stable prices, little traffic
In January, we informed that prices were stable and if there were any increases, they fluctuated around PLN 0.05 – 0.10 per kg. As a result, in January the average price was around PLN 0.95 – 1.1 per kg. And what does it look like at the end of April 2024?
In Gorzów Wielkopolski, steel scrap purchased and paid in cash ranges between PLN 0.82 and 0.95 per kg, depending on the type of material delivered. In Warsaw, purchasers agree and offer a price of PLN 1/kg in the case of thick steel (we checked 4 locations in the capital and the surrounding area – similar rates apply in each of them). The same price appears in price lists, among others. in Wrocław, Wyszków and Poznań. In Radzymin it is cheaper by PLN 0.05, and in Pruszków by PLN 0.10 in one store, and even by PLN 0.20 in the other. There is plenty in Rzeszów and similar thick steel scrap is worth PLN 1.1/kg.
When it comes to thin steel scrap, the amounts are around PLN 0.80 per kg. Aluminum, depending on the material category, costs from PLN 3.50 to over PLN 8 per kg. The most expensive are Al-Cu coolers, which fetch PLN 13-16 per kg.
For now, there are no signs of prices changing
To sum up, scrap prices are still the same as in winter and half a year ago. The average price ranges from PLN 0.90 to PLN 1.1. So if we have a lot of scrap in the yard that is bothering us, it is worth getting rid of it, because prices are unlikely to change for now. Those who have a lot of unnecessary metal and are waiting for a price increase should hide it and wait. Let’s hope this isn’t waiting for Godot.
