Next year, students can enroll in a new Bachelor of Science degree program at the University of Wyoming specific to ranch management and agricultural leadership.

The new program was approved Nov. 16 by the UW Board of Trustees. The Ranch Management and Agricultural Leadership B.S. will be housed within the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Natural Resources combining three degrees: animal science, agricultural business, and land management. The ranch management degree program will be available beginning in the fall 2024 semester, with the full degree plan appearing in the 2024-2025 catalog.

“UW Ag leadership has put together a thoughtful program with inputs from across the state,” UW Trustee Macey Moore said via press release. “Students who graduate with this degree will find themselves prepared with the ability to navigate a diversity of roles in agriculture for their entire careers.”

Upper-level classes are slated to include hands-on experience on working ranches, stockgrowers meetings, and conflict resolution.

“Students learn about agricultural leadership and develop exemplary interpersonal skills by practicing awareness, effective teamwork, and critical thinking,” reads the UW’s program overview.

The outlook for farm and ranch managers currently includes over 7,000 employees with an average salary of $50,548, according to UW. But, the program looks to prepare students for a diverse range of roles in agriculture, including management positions, resource management agencies, ag lending, sales representative positions, and more.

“The topics of ranch management and ag leadership are arguably more relevant to Wyoming than any other state,” Wyoming Department of Agriculture Director Doug Miyamoto said via press release. “Wyoming is also the smallest state in terms of population, which means our agricultural sector must punch above its weight and take on leadership roles.”

For more on the program, see UW’s website.
