A convoy of over a hundred tractors drove through central London to the seat of the British Parliament on Monday evening as part of a protest by farmers demanding government support for food production.
In particular, they are demanding that the government enforce food labeling requirements more closely and take steps to improve the country’s food security, as well as end post-Brexit trade deals that they believe allow the import of food produced below the standards required of UK farmers. and as a result, cheaper.
As they argue, all these issues and the lack of support promised by the government for farmers due to high production costs make their activities less and less profitable, which in turn threatens the country’s food security. Many of the participants in Monday’s protest had British flags on their tractors and slogans such as “Let’s save British agriculture” or “No agriculture, no food, no future.”
Unlike continental Europe, where farmers’ protests – often violent – have been going on for several weeks, in England only small, local rallies have taken place so far, and the protest that took place on Monday was the largest. Farmers in Wales have demonstrated several times in recent weeks, opposing the new system of agricultural subsidies proposed by the local government.
