Hungarian Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy announced that his country will impose new national restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine.

As reported by AP, the Hungarian government will introduce new restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products to protect its farmers and the domestic market.

– Brussels and the European Commission have betrayed Hungarian farmers, instead of helping them, they support Ukrainian oligarchs – Hungarian Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy explained the decision, referring to the extension of the EU’s free trade agreement with Ukraine.

Nagy said the European Commission’s 2022 decision to allow duty-free imports from Ukraine was intended to help Ukraine without harming EU agriculture, but instead led to “serious oversupply and a significant price reduction” in the European agricultural market. The costs of this decision are borne by farmers.

Nagy announced that since the EU does not undertake to protect European farmers who cannot compete with cheap imports from the East, Hungary must implement its own additional safeguards “within its national competences”. Details of possible restrictions and regulations have not yet been provided.
