The situation is bad – wheat prices today are the same as in the 1990s, and the means of production are several times higher. Farmers in Biała Podlaska also notice that even grain subsidies will not help, because there is no place to sell grain at the moment.
Farmers do not organize protests for entertainment. Yesterday, i.e. March 20, they met less formally in Biała Podlaska – due to the lack of consent from the city mayor to block the bypass. So they came to the city with tractors, among others. for an interview with the president.
Prices in shopping centers are the same as 20 years ago. What about production costs?
Farmers gathered in front of the city hall in Biała Podlaska, including: to meet the president and demonstrate against the lack of consent to organize the protest, but also to show themselves to the city’s residents and present their problems and demands. The situation on farms is beginning to be dramatic – grain prices in purchases are drastically low. Wheat costs approximately PLN 600/t.
– I remember the times when wheat cost PLN 600. It was the 1990s – said Marek Wilbik, a farmer and entrepreneur from the Łomazy commune.
– But back then, agricultural production inputs, such as fertilizers, were three times cheaper than today. The same applies to fuel prices. We have been reporting this problem for a long time and we are waiting for the government’s reaction. As of today, we have not seen any systemic solutions, he added.

Pressed against the wall
As farmers say, there is no way out today because their backs are already against the wall. Farmers who run various agricultural production sectors: plants, animals and horticulture are protesting. There are even beekeepers.
– We are here from all industries, because everyone is in a bad situation today – said Arek Zaniewicz, a farmer from Międzyrzec Podlaski.

In turn, Tomasz Kurowski from Stasiówka in the commune. Łomazy noted that today, ad hoc solutions, such as subsidies for grain sold, will not change much because there are no people willing to purchase grain.
– We do not know who and what this subsidy is for, since we have nowhere to sell grain – said Kurowski.
Farms in the region of eastern Poland are also in an uncomfortable situation because it is far from transfer points, such as ports or recipients from western EU countries. This makes the price of grain transport higher, and thus the farmer receives a lower purchase price.
