The Ukrainian Danube Navigation Company (UDP) offers exporters to redirect shipments stuck in trucks on the border with Poland to three river routes to the EU. Caravans of barges are waiting in ports.
An emergency plan was created in Ukraine to save exports in the face of ongoing road blockades on the Polish border. The Ukrainian authorities want to redirect trucks to ports on the Danube and transfer the transports to ships and barges. The Ukrainian Danube Navigation Company (UDP) is prepared for this operation – reports Latifundist.
River caravans instead of trucks
UDP offers exporters three lines that will travel through caravans composed of ships and barges. They will be able to load both bulk goods and containers, said the company and the Ministry of Reconstruction of Ukraine, which encourages exporters to switch from road transport to river transport.
Three Danube routes
The first transport route offered leads to Galati in Romania and is the fastest Danube route to the EU. One river caravan can make up to 7 such trips a month, because the route is covered in several days. The second route leads to Regensburg, Germany, and is the longest route.
It allows you to deliver cargo to Germany or another port on the middle and upper Danube. The third route is directed to Constanta, Romania, which is also a Black Sea port with the possibility of further exports by sea.
An alternative to border blocking
According to UDP, river transport may be an alternative for 5,000 people. trucks. The company currently operates 25 self-propelled fleet units and over 200 barges. It will also offer container deliveries to Danube ports in Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria, and plans to launch further routes. The company provides warehouses and reloading in Ukrainian ports, as well as the organization of reloading in destination ports – we read in Latifundist. Currently, the volume of exports via the Danube is 1.2-1.8 million tons per month.
