– We call on the European Commission to submit a proposal to impose sanctions in connection with the import of Russian and Belarusian food and agricultural products to the European Union – says the text of the resolution adopted by the Sejm on Thursday. At the same time, the Chamber called on the EU Council and the European Parliament to take actions to protect sensitive sectors of the EU market against excessive imports from Ukraine. The document also stated that the situation of European agriculture requires verification of the provisions of the Green Deal.
In the resolution “on imposing sanctions in connection with the import of Russian and Belarusian food and agricultural products into the European Union”, the Sejm emphasized that the import of food and agricultural products from Russia and Belarus continues to generate huge income for Russian and Belarusian producers and traders as well as the budgets of these countries.
– It is our moral obligation to stop trade that may directly or indirectly contribute to strengthening the ability of Russia and its supporting Belarus to continue the war with Ukraine, especially since Russian imports may include grain stolen from the occupied territories of Ukraine, the Chamber said.
The Sejm also pointed out that trade with these countries has a negative impact on the single market.
– Russia continues its strategy of treating food as a weapon, causing disruptions to the supply of Ukrainian agricultural products around the world. Therefore, the EU’s main priority should be to continue supporting Ukraine in restoring the export of its goods to the countries that need it most. The food and agricultural trade cannot continue to support the brutal Russian regime and its enablers in Minsk, the document says.
The Sejm also called on the EU Council and the European Parliament to introduce changes in the scope of autonomous trade measures in order to protect sensitive sectors of the EU agricultural market against excessive imports from Ukraine.
– We expect the European Commission to urgently undertake work aimed at returning as soon as possible to the application of exclusively the rules resulting from the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine in trade relations with Ukraine – stressed the MEPs.

According to the Sejm, the situation of European agriculture also requires immediate verification of the provisions of the Green Deal by EU institutions. His “excessive, unreasonable and costly” demands on agriculture should be “suspended and corrected.”
– Actions to protect the climate must take into account the real needs and opportunities of European farmers – emphasized the Chamber.
