The Polish Biomethane Organization (POB) has submitted a formal position to the Ministry of Environment and Environment on the need to further update the National Energy and Climate Plan (KPEiK) to include the development of biomethane production in Poland. POB experts point out directly that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment does not include biomethane in the energy transformation.
The Polish Biomethane Organization (POB) has submitted a formal position to the Minister of Climate and Environment on the need to further update the National Energy and Climate Plan (KPEiK) and on the necessary and urgent to implement legislative demands for the development of biomethane production in Poland.
Biomethane not included in the Polish energy transformation plan
Members of the Polish Biomethane Organization estimate their financial involvement in biomethane projects, including preparation and development, and construction of renewable energy installations by 2030, at the CAPEX level of at least PLN 17.5 billion and see the possibility of producing up to 2 billion m in Poland3 biomethane per year.
To achieve these goals, however, significant legislative changes are needed and the industry must be guaranteed a clear and long-term state strategy for the development of the biomethane market in Poland in documents such as KPEiK and PEP2040. Investors need support from the new government, stability and clear rules of operation. We are calling for all these changes and today we are formally submitting our demands, developed among POB members, to the Minister of Climate and Environment – said Michał Tarka, director general of POB.

Biomethane as a fuel for energy transformation, including home heating
– Many of the largest EU countries are already showing how many benefits the dynamic development of the biomethane market will provide them. However, they started with strategies and political documents as well as comprehensive legislation. Poland should join them as soon as possible,” adds Michał Tarka.
POB points to the following demands:
- Including the biomethane production target for 2030 in the NECP at the level of 2 billion m33 and including specific amounts of biomethane as a fuel for energy transformation also for other sectors of the economy apart from transport.
- Covering larger renewable energy installations above 1 MW with the support instrument based on a fixed purchase price of biomethane by introducing a transitional period preceding the implementation of the target support instrument based on a competitive tender procedure (auction).
- Coverage of a support instrument based on a fixed purchase price of biomethane transported also in compressed or liquefied form by means of transport other than gas networks.
- Introducing solutions enabling better integration of renewable energy installations producing biomethane with gas networks.
- Introduction of facilitations in the investment and construction process of renewable energy installations producing biomethane.
- Enabling the use of biomethane in order to achieve the National Indicative Target by entities obliged to do so.
