According to the latest data from the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), between May and November last year, the pig population in our western neighbor increased slightly.
According to Destatis data, at the end of November last year the pig population in Germany was approximately 21.22 million. Compared to the end of May, this is an increase of nearly 75,000. animals (+1.3%). At the same time, the number of pig herds decreased slightly: at the end of November, there were 16,170 herds in Germany, i.e. 30 less than in May last year). It is easy to calculate that the average size of a pig herd in Germany is just over 1,300 animals. For comparison, the size of the statistical herd in Poland currently oscillates around 180 pigs.

Will the population start to rebuild?
Currently, the state of the fattening population in the period described above does not tell us much. Conclusions can be drawn by observing changes in the population of the basic herd. During the period in question, the sow population in Germany increased by a total of just over 5,000. It may not seem like much, but it is worth noting that this increase is mainly due to the increase in the number of gilts being prepared for breeding. in the period in question, this number increased by over 7.5 thousand, i.e. by nearly 5%.

Is this a sign of the beginning of the reconstruction of the pig population in Germany? This would be an exaggerated statement, it seems that more will be able to be said after the publication of data for the first half of this year.
