
According to data from the Central Statistical Office, the cattle population in December 2023 amounted to 6,435.5 thousand. pieces and was lower by 0.2%. compared to December last year.
The decrease in the total size of the cattle herd resulted from a decrease in the population of all age and use groups of the herd, except for cattle aged 2 years and more. In December 2023, the cattle population was 6,435.5 thousand. pieces and there were 12.8 thousand pieces (0.2%) lower than last year, and compared to the herd size in June 2023, it increased by 75.8 thousand. pieces (1.2%).
The population of calves under 1 year of age decreased by 0.5% compared to the population in December 2022, and compared to June 2023, it increased by 3.5%. to the level of 1919.8 thousand pieces.
The herd of young cattle aged 1-2 years old decreased by 1.9% compared to the previous year, and compared to June 2023, a decrease of 0.3% was recorded. and reached the level of 1665.8 thousand. pieces.
The number of cattle aged 2 years and over increased by 1.0% compared to the population in December 2022, and by 0.6% compared to June 2023. and reached the level of 2,849.9 thousand. pieces.
The cow population compared to December 2022 and June 2023 increased by 32.1 thousand, respectively. pieces (by 1.5%) and by 37.9 thousand pieces (by 1.7%) to the level of 2,203.9 thousand pieces.
Most of them are cows
In the structure of the total cattle herd, the share of individual age and use groups in December 2023 was:
- calves under 1 year of age – 29.8%,
- young breeding and slaughter cattle aged 1-2 years – 25.9%,
- cows – 34.2 percent,
- other breeding and slaughter cattle aged 2 years and over – 10%.
According to the Central Statistical Office, compared to the structure of the cattle population in December 2022, the share of calves (by 0.1 percentage points), cattle aged 1-2 years old (by 0.5 percentage points) and other breeding cattle decreased. and slaughter aged 2 years and more (by 0.03 percentage points), while in the cow population group the share increased by 0.6 percentage points. during the period under study.

The largest cattle population in Masovia
The following voivodeships had the largest share in the national cattle population: Masovian Voivodeship (18.8%), Greater Poland Voivodeship (17.9%) and Podlaskie Voivodeship (16.4%). However, in the following voivodeships: Lower Silesia, Lubuskie, Podkarpackie and West Pomerania, the share in the national cattle population did not reach 2%.
According to preliminary data on foreign trade, in the period from June 1 to November 30, 2023, cattle imports amounted to approx. 128.3 thousand. pieces and decreased by 1.1%. compared to the same period last year. Cattle exports in the above-mentioned period was 26.1 thousand. pieces.
