We present to your their passion journeys. An award-winning global entrepreneur, Baljit Gill was born in India. Her father, a former Indian Army Officer, decided to immigrate to Canada with his family to provide them with international opportunities. In turn, Baljit fulfilled his desire and completed her studies in Business, in British Columbia. Initially, the family faced many challenges with regard to cultural differences and racism. But Baljit found strength in her father and elder brother, who were real estate developers and construction contractors. Coming from this background, Baljit knew she wanted to enter the business world.  The adage ‘First attempts aren’t always successful’ proved right when her cosmetics business failed to take off, paving the way for her to successfully build spec homes. When a friend overseas needed to procure some hardwoods, it led to a partnership in a wood wholesale/export company. This eventually led Baljit to take over the Kitwanga Mill, in the Northern region of British Columbia. Unfortunately, she had to sell the mill at a great loss in 2009, but the strong relationships forged became priceless as the years went by. It also exposed her to the challenges existing in Northern BC, which led her to work with Gitanyow First Nations with whom she had prior experience. Baljit then presented a plan to First Nations to find a solution to a decadent old growth forest. This also became a project for creating many jobs, educational opportunities with transferable skill sets in the region, and brought many opportunities to the North West of British Columbia. In addition, her work contributed to the education of indigenous children. Every person’s life is full of challenges and no one is exempt from this. Baljit’s philosophy is simple – either one can sit and sulk, or get up and take action to make it better. The one way she maintains her sanity is by practicing SKY meditation by the Art of Living Foundation. Her company – Northcrest Forest Products’s export business was also brought to a halt due to the lockdowns. This led to outsourcing with other countries to develop custom cut programs and to pursue new markets. Speaking of that time, Baljit says, “Never, never give up.” She fondly remembers Mr. Ted Roger’s words from an event where he said, “If you fall, don’t take it personally, just dust yourself and restart”. After all, self-doubt is always one’s greatest enemy and weakness. “Being human, it has been my weakness as well, but it also helps keep one’s ego in check. Recognizing one’s weakness is the key; face it and deal with it!” adds Baljit. Baljit’s professional contribution is that she is constantly creating opportunities in a very depressed region of British Columbia. She states, “We are currently developing a green energy source (wood pellet plant) from rotting forests and wood waste so new trees can be planted and healthy forests can flourish. This is creating over 200 direct and indirect employment positions. As a company, we are committed to educational and stress management courses for the youth and the communities we work with.” By successfully turning waste into green energy, Baljit is changing the region she works in. Her passion and inspiration for the betterment of the environment and communities have turned this leading Canadian woman of Indian origin into a global business player. Magazine’s Diversity Award in 2020 and the Most Valuable Professional in 2022, for her many accomplishments. She was also the 2nd runner-up for the Mrs India Michigan pageant run by IMP in 2022. Born and raised in India, Dr Aparajita moved to the United States when she was 14 years old due to her parents’ jobs.  She recalls that this was the first time she was called a ‘minority’ in her life. Early on, she was expected to become a medical doctor and eventually enrolled as a pre-med student. Life took a dramatic turn for her when she had the first traumatic head injury which prompted her to make a career switch after being exposed to the field of Psychology. Then, when she was pursuing her doctorate in psychology she sustained a second and more severe brain injury.  She remembers, “I was hit by a car. It left me with a severe brain injury that I had to recover from on my own without any support. This experience led me on my current career path after I completed my doctorate 3 years after I was brought back from death.” Being an Indian-American immigrant and also a survivor of two severe brain injuries brought about a life-altering impact in an epiphany that led to her developing her LEGup framework –  an intentional framework to increase inclusion, equity, employee engagement and loyalty. In her field of work, she had seen Diversity and Inclusion being developed in largely performative ways, in silos and context vacuums. She felt that the larger point of Inclusion was being missed as these initiatives were being treated as just boxes that need to be checked off with little intention towards inclusion.  This had a negative impact on many organisations and labour forces, which is why her LEGup framework became a monumental landmark in her career. Being a social-personality psychologist, she ensures that the focal point of her work is a complete package of well-being including physical, emotional, financial, social, spiritual including psychological safety. She remarks, “I do this by helping my clients make their own invisible and hidden strengths, assets, biases and thoughts visible to themselves. It’s only when we can see ourselves as whole human beings, objectively without judgment, can we see, respect and honour others around us as whole human beings.” Always true to herself, Dr. Aparajita has a multifaceted personality and has adorned many hats in life including being a chronic illness patient, brain injury awareness advocate, founder, cultural ambassador, DEI&B consultant and leader. She says, “I also remind myself every day that while all the roles in my life are the different hats I wear, me being a leader is who I am as a person – the head that wears all those hats.” When asked about her appetite for business, she responds by saying, “I am on a mission to build 1 million heart-centred whole-person inclusive leaders across all walks of life, around the globe in the next 10 years. Our societies, our organizations and especially our future generations deserve a world that allows them to thrive as the whole human beings that they are, and to be able to tackle the problems of their generations.” Dr Aparajita’s personality is one of strength and self-belief that serves as the fuel behind her journey that radiates good energy. His name is synonymous with his pathbreaking platform – sysotel.ai, yet, few know about the multi-faceted man behind the name. Raj’s story began in the small town of Rourkela in Odisha, India. Born in a loving family, he remained in his hometown till he completed his schooling. When he turned 18, he left home for the first time to pursue hotel management from Fakir Mohan University in the nearby town of Balasore in Odisha. Destined for bigger things, Raj landed a job at the prestigious Taj hotel in Mumbai. With stars in his eyes and a determination to match, he landed in the commercial capital of India. Starting as an apprentice, he grew into a seasoned hospitality professional over two decades. During his tenure, he worked with the biggest brands such as Royal Orchid, ISTA, Cambay, and others, with proven expertise in the areas of hotel operations, sales and marketing, data and marketing analysis. At the same time, he rediscovered his passion for computer technology. He recalls: “Passionate about both hotels and computers, I could pursue an education in only one. But my interest in computers never died. All hotels use softwares for their day to day operations. Whenever a new software launched, I used to be the one most excited to see how it worked.” Innovative and focussed, by now Raj had realised that he was better cut out for entrepreneurship, and not service. “Since childhood, I knew I wanted to be my own boss,” he says with a smile. The thought of starting his own venture consumed Raj’s days and nights. He actively started looking for an idea, or a solution in his domain, that resonated with him. This is how he came up with sysotel.ai, with friends and co-founders Ravish Patel and Kiran Suthar. “With more than 20 years in hospitality, we zeroed in on a common problem – there was no software for automated yield management. This was our Eureka moment!” he says with pride. Raj began dabbling in yield management manually. But the pandemic provided him the time and opportunity to work on his brand and enhance it. Come 2021, he officially registered sysotel.ai, a SaaS firm that provides end-to-end hospitality solutions. Speaking about its USP, Raj tells us, “Sysotel is an automated yield management system especially targeted at mid to small hotels. Such a system in the open marketplace is very expensive. Only the luxury segment hotels use it, and even theirs is often manual. The one we have built is highly automated.. It integrates Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning without hitting your pocket.. Thus, it is a highly advanced yet cost effective solution.” Sysotel.ai may well be the pathbreaking platform the hospitality industry needs. In its first year itself, one of its module engines is out in the market and doing wonders. With a tech office in Bangalore, they have also collaborated with big brands and renowned companies. For instance, sysotel.ai recently became an official partner of Google Hotels by promoting visibility and website traffic for partner hotels free of charge. Prior to sysotel, Raj had also co-founded Rev Matrix, GoXplore and stayplans.com. A self confessed workaholic, Raj says he unwinds by coming up with something new: “If something comes in my mind, I always scribble it, explore how it can help the company to grow, and figure how it can be a learning ground for my team. The bottomline is always the customer experience, and how we can ease it. We present to you their passion journeys. The lovely Vandana Bhatia holds a rare professional achievement – she has completed her Company Secretary, LLB, and MBA! After 11+ years of multi-disciplinary experience, she’s presently with Hyderabad based Ryan Tax Services Private Limited as Director – Legal, Compliance & Company Secretary. Vandana’s self-empowering journey is inspirational, to say the least. Coming from the small city of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, she entered the corporate regime right after school due to family crisis. However, her career got a kickstart in 2009 when she joined Ranjeet Pandey & Associates as a CS intern and was soon promoted as an assistant. It was during this tenure that she completed her CS from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and went on to earn her LLB and MBA (Finance) degrees. In 2011, she got her first breakthrough with Dr Reddy’s, joining as Company Secretary for one of its subsidiaries – Aurigene Discovery Technologies Limited. There were times I had to study in candlelight as there were almost 12 hour power cuts in Ghaziabad, and we didn’t have an inverter.” Vandana credits her success to her parents who supported her every step of the way and made her who she is. A proud daughter, she strives to bring value to their lives today. A consummate professional, she’s equally passionate about her job and owning responsibility for her actions. After dabbling in verticals from Pharma and Clinical Research to Education and Finance, Vandana is excelling in her role at Ryan India, where she has established the Corporate Governance Framework and oversees all legal operations. She has been exceptionally successful in the corporate legal space, ever since she started her journey as a manager at Caspian and within a span of 4 years, went on to head the entire legal department. This event was executed under the leadership of Tamil Nadu’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister R. Sakkarapani. The Feat was later certified by Elite World Records, Asian Records Academy, India Records Academy and Tamilan Book of Records in the category “Most Trees Planted by a Team in 4 Hours (Single Location)”.  Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, stated “I congratulate the people of Oddanchatram constituency for their successful plantation drive. The environmental conservation is an integral part of the Dravidian model and various measures are taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to protect and combat nature and the environment. I laud the efforts of the TN Food Minister for executing this massive plantation drive and recalled former Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s saying “that a good society should grow trees instead of religion”. According to TN Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, R.Sakkarapani,  with a sincere commitment to protect mother nature and to create a friendly green environment, we have executed this drive. We have planted 6.03lakhs trees in 4 hours covering 52 hectares. In order to protect the trees which are planted, we have established 2 wells, 2 farm ponds, and 6 bore wells. Trenches are created throughout the surface to harvest rainwater, and we have also erected proper irrigation infrastructure at every nook and corner of the location. I am sure that this location will be a treasure to the general public and soon it would become an iconic tourist spot of the state, he proudly added. Dr S.Visagan, District Collector, detailed that Restoring landscapes brings prosperity, security,and opportunity, Forest landscape restoration is not just an environmental strategy; it’s an economic and social development strategy as well. I urge everyone to be a part of Green Tamil Nadu Mission, he further said. Deepak Sreevatsava, Project Director, Green Tamil Nadu Mission, stated that, the aim behind the initiative was to full-fill the mission and vision of Chief Minister of TamilNadu, M.K.Stalin in ensuring “Green-TamilNadu”, with the task to increase its forest to 33% cover from the present 23.7% before 2030 to combat climate change, he further said. Dr.V.Geethalakshmi,Vice-Chancellor, TamilNadu Agricultural University, pointed that, this massive plantation drive created an awareness on importance of preserving trees and how it reserves climate change. In future, this location will be adobe to dense forest that will provide shelter to several species, she further added. World Record titles were conferred to Dindigul District Administration by Dr Rabih Baalbakhi (CEO-Elite World Records), Dr A.K.Senthill Kkumar (Ambassador-Asian Records Academy), P.Jeganathan (Senior Records Manager-India Records Academy), Dr B.Balasubramanian (Senior Records Manager-Tamilan Book of Records) and were received by Council of Ministers Udhayanidhi Stalin (Youth Welfare and Sports Development) R.Sakkarapani(Food and Civil Supplies), I.Periyasamy (Rural Development), Dr Mathiventhan (Forest) and Dr S.Visagan (District Collector).
