The data from the Central Statistical Office are devastating. Despite a significant increase in the overall number of pigs and sow population, Wielkopolska – the leader in national production – lost over 18%. population.
The general data on the pig population seem to be optimistic. Well, according to research by the Central Statistical Office, as of December 1, 2023, there were 9,769,700 pigs kept in our country. Compared to the beginning of June last year, the total pig population increased by 333.3 thousand. pieces, which gives an increase of 3.5%. Comparing current data with December 2022, we see that the pig population has increased by 1.5% over the year.
The number of sows is increasing
What is even more pleasing is the clear rebound in the sow population, which increased from 590.6 thousand. animals in June, to 663.3 animals at the beginning of December, which gives an increase of 11.9%.
For the sake of order, it is worth comparing the data from the Central Statistical Office with the data published by the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture. According to these data, as of November 30, we had 9,663,764 pigs registered in the IRZ system. The difference is just over PLN 100,000. animals is probably the result of the research methodology conducted by the Central Statistical Office. ARiMR data should be considered more reliable, as they provide precise information on the number of registered animals and can only be slightly underestimated by breeders keeping pigs without registration.
Pogrom in Greater Poland
However, the situation in Greater Poland is worrying. Data from the latest Central Statistical Office study indicate that over the twelve months – from December 2022 to December 2023, the pig population in this region decreased by as much as 18.4%. amounting to 2,801,396 animals. Which means that during the year Greater Poland lost over 600,000. pigs. This is a continuation of the trend from the previous year: between December 2021 and December 2022, the region lost nearly 8%. population.

Despite this, Wielkopolska is still the clear leader in domestic pig production, maintaining nearly 29%. population. Other important regions include the Masovian Voivodeship (1,328,930 pigs, an increase of 6.7%), the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship (1,016,992 pigs, an increase of 20.3%), and the Łódź Voivodeship (1,003,077 pigs, an increase of 3.3%). percent). In total, the four mentioned regions are responsible for nearly 2/3 of the national pig production.
