According to European media reports, the farmers’ protest in Brussels is turning into a peasant uprising of unprecedented strength. The European district was blocked by 1,500 tractors. When the police intervened, barricades were set on fire in the streets.
As we read on Western portals, Belgian farmers from all sides entered Brussels at night and have been blocking the so-called European quarter. They are supported by colleagues from other EU countries.
It’s hot in Brussels
Eggs and firecrackers were thrown in front of the EU Parliament towards MEPs going to the meeting. Manure spreaders and slurry barrels were also put into operation. Then police forces attacked the farmers, using gas and water cannons. The farmers’ anger then intensified. Protesters quickly built barricades, which were set on fire. The police cordoned off the European Parliament building.
As we reported earlier, protests and roadblocks are also ongoing across the country. As in many other EU member states. The European Council is meeting today in Brussels.
Farmers will not give up
The protesters make it clear that the concessions proposed by the European Commission in terms of setting aside land, “rethinking” the agreement with Mercosur, or proposals regarding trade with Ukraine do not satisfy them in any way. Farmers accuse Eurocrats of only postponing problems, but they do not want to change the harmful course on which EU policy has found itself. They promise that they will not allow themselves to be deceived by empty promises.
