Mahindra unveils new line of compact & utility tractors

As part of a North American debut, Mahindra celebrated the newest additions to its fleet of compact and subcompact tractors during the 2024 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville. The machines on display were among those first showcased at an event in South Africa last August.

Dubbed “Powered by OJA,” from the Sanskrit word “Ojas,” which symbolizes energy and strength, Mahindra put two model lines front and center at the trade show: the 20-26 hp 11oo models and the 23-26 hp 2100 models. Constructed on two different chassis sizes, the new Mahindras offer cab and open station configurations. Air conditioning is a unique feature of the 2126 compact cab.

Viren Popli, president and CEO of Mahindra Ag North America, said in an interview that the technology incorporated into these entry-level models will ultimately migrate across all of the brand’s tractors.

“We looked at how tractors are used by our customers in a completely different way,” Popli explained.

For example, he said, communications and monitoring technology called telematics is common in the automobile industry, but Mahindra is bringing more of that into even the compact and subcompact tractor space. The 1100 and 2100 models will allow users to do such things as remotely monitoring how much diesel fuel the tractor has or receiving an alert when the tractor moves — a geo-fence that helps prevent theft or unwanted use of a machine.

“For telematics, the technology is the same, but how you use it and deliver benefit to the tractor consumer is different,” Popli said.

He noted that, in the the U.S. market, about 50 percent of the tractor industry is under 20 hp — and 70 percent of those belong to first-time tractor owners.

So, Mahindra’s new models are centered around the concepts of ease of use, power, and advanced intelligence and operation.

The ease-of-use aspect offers many features that are uncommon or unique in the small tractor segment, such as side-by-side pedals instead of a rocker pedal, quick coupling in all equipment, and an electronic PTO knob as opposed to a lever.

The 1100 and 2100 series even has a display to aid new owners in following the four steps to start and run the machine: sitting on the seat, having a foot on the brake, setting the gear to neutral, and turning the PTO off.

“We put a little LED display which has four green lights so that, so if they’re not all green, you’ve got something to fix,” Popli said. The CEO anticipates that this will reduce assistance calls to dealers and help allow users to save face when they overlook one simple — and maybe even obvious — step upon startup.

Plus, Mahindra is proud of the newer, more comfortable seat that’s included on these models — think nicer, heavier stitching, and better lumbar support.

“If it’s important, why would you not do it,” Popli said.

These Mahindras are equipped with a DI engine featuring powerful backup torque and impressive fuel economy and lugging ability. A new higher-capacity hydraulic pump allows features such as a backhoe to be used even on these smaller machines, and they remain highly agile.

Media materials summarize that the OJA platform tractor range (the subcompact 1100, compact 2100, and two utility models) boasts several advantages that elevate its performance and user experience:

  • Optimal power-to-weight ratio: With its power-to-weight ratio, the OJA platform tractors have higher power availability, making them agile and suitable for various applications such as landscaping, snow removal and property maintenance.
  • Connected intelligence for precision and performance: Equipped with a 3-cylinder engine featuring powerful back-up torque, the OJA platform ensures superior performance in terms of fuel economy and lugging ability. Additionally, the OJA platform’s connected features along with advanced hydraulics deliver precision, enhancing the overall versatility of these tractors.
  • Comfort and convenience: The thoughtful design of the OJA platform tractors caters to user comfort with features such as tilt and telescopic steering with conveniently positioned controls. The inclusion of side shift controls with color-coded knobs adds to the operator’s awareness and convenience during operation, enhancing the overall experience in any operating situation.

“In this segment, we’ve only had one or two models, and they’ve been there for some time. So we said that if we’re going to do this, we need to really look at how the segment is used,” Popli said. “Customers buying this are not looking to change their tractor every two or three years. They want to buy this tractor and have it for the next 10 years.”
