Friday is the last day on which disabled and elderly voters can apply to vote by proxy in local government elections.
- Pursuant to the Electoral Code, voters with disabilities and those who will be 60 years old on the day of voting – April 7 – can vote by proxy.
- An application for the preparation of a power of attorney act is submitted to the head of the commune (mayor, city president) of the commune in which the voter would vote in person and is included in the voter roll.
- You can report your intention to vote by proxy at the office or online.
To register a proxy online, you must prepare login details to a trusted profile, a scan or photo of the consent given by the person who will be the proxy and – in the case of a person with disabilities – a scan or photo of a current disability certificate.
Who can be an electoral representative?
Only someone who has active electoral rights, i.e. has the right to vote, can be a proxy. It cannot be a member of the district electoral commission, a representative of the trustee, a social observer or a person running for election.
Local elections 2024. Facilities for people with disabilities and seniors
The Electoral Code also provides for other special rights for people with disabilities and seniors to make voting easier for them. They can, for example, vote by correspondence and are also entitled to free transport to the polling station. However, the deadline for registering your intention to use these options expired last Monday, March 25.
At the polling station, a person with a disability that prevents good vision may use a Braille overlay. After voting, the overlay must be returned to the committee.
A voter with a disability, at his or her request, may be assisted in voting at the polling station by another person, including a minor. This assistance may only be of a technical nature. It cannot consist in suggesting to the voter how to vote or in voting in the voter’s place. This person cannot be a committee member, shop steward or social or international observer.
