IUNG report. Agricultural drought in 15 voivodeships in Poland

In Poland, agricultural drought occurred in 15 voivodeships, causing crop losses of at least 20%. – reported the Institute of Cultivation, Fertilization and Soil Science. It affected crops of spring and winter cereals, strawberries, fruit bushes and trees, rapeseed and turnip rape.

“As a result of the moisture conditions occurring in the third reporting period (from April 11 to June 10 this year – PAP), we confirm the occurrence of an agricultural drought in the territory of Poland, causing losses in yields of monitored crops by at least 20% compared to the yields obtained in average long-term conditions weather conditions,” the Institute of Cultivation, Fertilization and Soil Science (IUNG) reported on Monday.

The Institute added in the report that agricultural drought occurred during this period in 15 voivodeships: Masovian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Warmia-Masurian, Pomeranian, Lubusz, Łódź, Podlasie, Lublin, Greater Poland, Lower Silesia, Opole, West Pomeranian, Podkarpackie, Świętokrzyskie and Silesia .

It was noted that during the period under study, the average value of the Climatic Water Balance (KBW) for the country, on the basis of which the drought risk is assessed, was negative and amounted to -93 mm. The water deficit in the current period has decreased by 15 mm compared to the previous six-decade period.

The greatest water shortages were recorded in the northern part of the Lublin Upland, Polesie and the western part of the Wielkopolska Lowland, the northern part of the Podlasie Lowland and the west of the Masovian Lowland, i.e. from -170 to -189 mm. A large deficit also occurred in the Podlasie and Masovian Lowlands, the Masurian Lake District, Kashubia, Żuławy, the Silesian Lowlands and the Lublin Upland, i.e. from -150 to -169 mm – it was reported.

Drought occurred in six crops of spring cereals, winter cereals, strawberries, fruit bushes, rapeseed and turnip rape, and fruit trees. It was added that the greatest extent of agricultural drought occurred in the case of spring cereal crops, and drought in these crops was recorded in 1,461 communes, i.e. in the case of 58.98%. all Polish communes.

There was a reduction of 12.44 percentage points compared to the previous reporting period. Drought was recorded in the area of 15.56%. arable land in the country (reduction by 9.47 percentage points compared to the previous reporting period) – it was written.

As IUNG reported at the beginning of June, in the second reporting period, from April 1 to May 31 this year, agricultural drought occurred in Poland in all 16 voivodeships. It concerned mainly spring cereals.

The Institute of Fertilization and Soil Science is an institution subordinate to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2005, IUNG obtained the status of a state research institute – it was announced on the institute’s website.
