By tracking data from the IRZ ARiMR system, you can easily calculate the average size of pig herds in a given voivodeship. There are two observations here: firstly, over the last two years this value has increased by over 50%. Secondly, the greatest concentration of production is observed in regions that are not particularly famous for pig breeding.
We have known for some time that the structure of pig production in Poland has been changing dynamically. In 2014, the statistical herd numbered 53 pigs. Today this parameter is more than three times higher. According to the latest ARiMR data, the average number of animals kept in the herd’s headquarters is over 180 animals. But what does this value look like in individual regions?
Concentration of pig production in individual voivodeships
Below we publish a list of average pig herd sizes for individual regions in 2021 and 2023:
It is no surprise that statistically the smallest herds of pigs operate in regions where pig breeding is of relatively little importance – especially in Podkarpacie and Małopolska. However, a certain surprise are the voivodeships that occupy the highest places in our ranking. These are regions that are not famous for pig breeding: the West Pomeranian and Lubusz Voivodeships. The next places are taken by more “Trzodziar” regions, such as the Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian and Masovian voivodeships. Interestingly, the regions traditionally famous for pig breeding: the Greater Poland, Łódź and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships are in the middle of the pack.

It is worth mentioning that the published data do not fully reflect the actual production picture. They talk about the number of registered animals on a given day, but do not touch on aspects such as the number of piglets being born. Hence, this is only a fragment of the actual situation.
Where is the largest herd of pigs?
It is not possible to determine the size of individual herds directly from the IRZ ARiMR system data, so a precise answer to the question about the largest pig herd in Poland is impossible. Nevertheless, it is certainly one of the largest herds in the country. This conclusion can be drawn by looking at the data for the Złotoryja district in Lower Silesia: only one herd of more than 2,000 is kept in the district. pigs: its number is… 48,290 animals reported.
