Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Wednesday in Krakow that he would not block the border with Ukraine in a situation where its fate will be decided within months. – But when it comes to competition from Ukrainian grain, I am doing something – he emphasized.
During Wednesday’s meeting of the Civic Coalition in Krakow, the Prime Minister, asked by farmers about specific decisions regarding them, declared that the issue of helping farmers is currently one of the most important challenges.
– I cannot imagine and do not intend to imagine Poland without strong and healthy agriculture. I also cannot imagine that a Polish farmer would be left to his own devices in a situation where, through no fault of his own, he is exposed to competition, until recently completely unpunished competition from cheap agricultural products from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, Tusk said.
He also stressed that “he will not be the one to stab Ukraine in the back.”
I will not block the border with Ukraine in a situation where the fate of Ukraine is being decided during these months. I won’t do it and I won’t let anyone else do it. But when it comes to competition from Ukrainian grain, I am doing something, he emphasized.
– In June, we will be able to legally report to the Commission an embargo on all food and agricultural products from Ukraine – announced the head of government.
He also pointed out that Poland “cannot effectively close transit with Ukraine” and products, if not through the Polish border, will reach the EU through Romania or Slovakia. – We will do everything to ensure that this transit does not fall apart along the way in Poland, to designate very specific and few places where the transit will be able to pass through Poland – he declared.
He also announced that “in a year we will return – as the entire EU – to the pre-war rules of trade with Ukraine.”
