Hundreds of tractors blocked the Czech capital yesterday in protest against EU and national agricultural policy. Farmers demanded the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture.
- Czech farmers, like Polish farmers, protested once again in the country’s capital.
- Hundreds of agricultural tractors blocked traffic on the streets of Prague yesterday – reports the AP agency.
- In this way, farmers expressed their opposition to both the EU and the government’s agricultural policy.
The demands of Czech farmers are similar to those of farmers throughout the EU. They demand that the implementation of the Green Deal strategy be suspended, or at least that its assumptions and goals be verified. Another demand addressed to Brussels is to reduce bureaucracy and stop cheap food imports to the EU, which destroys the profitability of European production. In this regard, the Czechs also support Polish demands to limit imports from Ukraine. Our southern neighbors also want to reduce taxes on agricultural land and abolish taxation on agricultural subsidies from the EU.
Minister to resign?
“Our goal is not to block traffic in Prague, our goal is to show the problems of agriculture,” Martin Pycha, head of the Czech Agricultural Union, which co-organized the protest, told the media.
Farmers stood in front of the Czech government headquarters to present a list of their demands. The Minister of Agriculture, Marek Vyborny, came to them and assured the audience that the government understood the farmers’ position and was ready for a constructive dialogue. However, the head of the ministry was booed by demonstrators who demanded his immediate resignation.
Farmers in the Czech Republic have lost faith in politicians and are fed up with constant promises without fulfillment. A similar farmers’ protest took place in Prague a month ago. At that time, the government also assured them of its good will, but did nothing to solve the problems.
