Due to the farmers’ protests, there is a lot of talk about the assumptions and ambitious goals of the European Green Deal. One of the topics is organic farming. How much of it do we have in Europe?
In 2020, the European Commission adopted the “Farm to Fork” strategy, where it supported not only the reduction of the use of plant protection products and mineral fertilizers, but also the allocation of 25% agricultural land for organic farming by 2030. In the National Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy for 2023-2027, Poland set a target of 7%. surface. So much less than previously assumed, but also half as much as the level from which we started at the beginning. Because in Poland we have about 3.5 percent. ecological surfaces.
How many hectares in Europe are under ecology?
We checked in which EU country, but also in Europe in general, has the most organic crops. It turns out that the largest area of organic agricultural land in Europe in 2021 was in France – over 2.77 million hectares, followed by Spain and Italy – approximately 2.6 and 2.2 million hectares, respectively. This can be seen in the chart below from statista.com.
In Poland, this ecological area is estimated at 509,286 ha.
What ecological area in Russia and Ukraine?
The published Statista.com ranking also included Russia and Ukraine. Currently, countries that are at war with each other.
The area in Russia is higher and overall in Europe in terms of area of organic agricultural land in Europe in 2021 ranks sixth with 6,554,657 ha.
Ukraine comes next with 422,299 ha. Interestingly, just ahead is Great Britain (UK), where in 2021 there were approximately 489.2 thousand. hectares of organic agricultural land.
