Introducing the Del Monte Rubyglow pineapple: the latest must-have for those who think regular yellow pineapples are just too pedestrian. This ruby-hued marvel isn’t just a fruit; it’s a statement.

A statement that says, “I have $395.99 to spend on a pineapple.”

Because nothing says “I’ve made it” like a pineapple that costs more than your entire weekly shopping list. Except, they’re already sold out at Melissa’ Produce, a southern California-based seller of specialty fruits and vegetables including Latin and Asian products, organic produce, and more.

Del Monte’s Rubyglow pineapple was created in Costa Rica after 16 years of research. Noted for their distinctive red exterior and sweetness, only a few thousand are produced each year. The pineapple is a cross between traditional varieties and Morada produced using traditional crossbreeding techniques.

The first, limited crop was available in China earlier this year and then offered in the U.S. only at Melissa’s, which sold out on Monday.

“Consumers are willing to pay for something that’s special,” Cindy van Rijswick, fresh produce strategist for Rabobank’s global research team, told news sources. When it comes to specialty produce, “there’s always a small market for higher-end restaurants, or foodies, or certain online channels,” she said.

Rubyglow’s coloration is due to the presence of natural pigments called lycopene and beta-carotene, which are also found in tomatoes and watermelons. In addition to being visually striking, the RubyGlow pineapple is rich in antioxidants, particularly lycopene and beta-carotene.

If you’ve got a whole grocery budget’s worth of funds to spend on a pineapple, don’t worry. You can jump on the notification list for Melissa’s and Del Monte to let you know when the Rubyglows are back in stock.
