There is much debate regarding animal welfare. Can well-being and high-efficiency production go hand in hand? This question was answered by prof. Robert Kupczyński from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
Can well-being and high-efficiency production go hand in hand? Of course, as emphasized by prof. Robert Kupczyński from the Department of Environmental Hygiene and Animal Welfare of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences during this year’s Zootechnical Forum.
– Yes, well-being and high production go hand in hand. Highly productive animals must have good housing conditions to make this production possible. High-yielding cows are physiologically adapted to high productivity and it is not a problem for them to produce 12 thousand. liters of milk per lactation or even more, but they require precise nutrition, optimal housing conditions and care from the breeder – noted Prof. Kupczyński.
There are many methods of assessing well-being
Our interlocutor also pointed out that there are many methods for assessing the level of well-being, although not all of them are used in practice, because “may be too problematic, expensive or difficult to interpret, especially for non-specialists in the field”. Currently, minimum maintenance standards are considered as a starting point.
