Can we expect pig prices to drop?

The weaner market is still stable. Can we expect a change in the trend in the coming weeks? As Remigiusz Bilski points out, if the prices of fattened pigs remain the same after Christmas, the prices of weaners will not drop either. Can we expect price increases? In Bilski’s opinion, the answer may be difficult, because the Danes claim that there are still several dozen crowns to the highest price, but they are unable to predict how the market will behave.

According to the results of our weekly survey, almost all surveyed weaner sales points decided to maintain prices.

Stabilization on a large stock exchange. What are the prices for fattened pigs set by VEZG?

Pre-Christmas stabilization on the live pig market. What are the prices of fattened pigs?

Forecasts for the piglet market

As Remigiusz Bilski, regional sales manager at PH Konrad, emphasizes, there should be no drops in weaner pig prices in the near future.

– We do not expect prices of weaner pigs to drop. Open market prices are slightly lower, but this may be due to fewer trading days this week and next. We do not see a surplus of weaners on the market. Week 14 is good, and for week 15 we have more people willing to buy than animals ready for sale, says Bilski.

– The development of the situation will depend on the fattening pig market. There have been rumors of a possible increase on the major stock exchange, but a strong effort to maintain prices is expected. If the prices of fattening pigs do not change, the pig market should also remain unchanged – he adds.

When will there be a breakthrough on the weaner market?

– The turning point on the weaner market will shift slightly this year. This may happen at the turn of April and May. We’ll see how things go. Currently, animals are selling well, grain is cheap, as is feed, and fattened pigs are kept at a satisfactory price. It’s been a long time since there was such a lively trade in fattened pigs during Holy Week. Usually, two weeks before Christmas, trading is over, says our interlocutor.

– If the prices of fattening pigs remain unchanged after the holidays, the prices of weaners will not fall either. Can we expect price increases? We don’t know and it’s impossible to find out even from the source. The Danes claim that there are still several dozen crowns left to reach the highest price, but they are unable to predict how the market will behave, notes Bilski.
