Drawn by open space and a less stressful way of life, more than 15.9 million people moved from major cities during the first six months of the pandemic, many to rural areas, according to change-of-address data from the U.S. Postal Service shared on MyMove.
So it’s no surprise that manufacturers like Bush Hog saw a spike in the sale of rotary cutters, tillers and finish mowers around this time.
“Throughout COVID-19, people who moved out of the cities and into the country bought little farmsteads of 5 and 10 acres,” says Dan Bratt, vice president of marketing at Bush Hog, the farm equipment manufacturing company located in Selma, Alabama. “Sales of rotary cutters were up almost 25% for three years, back-to-back.”
The sale of tillers and finish mowers also rose from pre-pandemic levels. Here’s what distinguishes Bush Hog models in the three categories.

Rotary cutters
The Single-Spindle Rotary Cutter was the first Bush Hog product to be introduced to the world back in 1951. Today, the extreme-duty BH516 is the flagship model of the company’s Single-Spindle lineup and it is designed and built to take down nearly any unwanted vegetation.
Bush Hog offers five rotary cutter series available in 4-foot, 5-foot, 6-foot and 7-foot cutting widths and for a range of tractor sizes and jobs, no matter how tough. “The 100 series are entry-level models for the hobby farmer who just bought 5 acres, the 200 series for someone cutting additional acres and the 300 series for heavy-duty cutting,” says Bratt. As for the 400 series models for ground and forestry reclamation, “they just knock down anything in their way!” he says.

Gear-drive rotary tillers
Three models of tillers, all gear driven, start with the ROTO HOG, the perfect tool for landscaping, seed beds or any application requiring that the soil be pulverized. The RTC50G has a 48-inch width made for compact tractors. As Bratt notes, “These are for people who moved to the country and are planting crops in their gardens.” Meanwhile, three models of RTG tillers come in the same tilling widths for tractors with a range of 15 to 65 hp. At the top of the tilling chain is the Bush Hog RTX series, the company’s heaviest-built tiller, which comes in 85-inch and 92-inch widths and is perfect for creating large vegetable or flower gardens, as well as green fields.

Finishing mowers
Available in cutting widths from 60 to 99 inches, four models of Bush Hog finishing mowers are ideal for property owners and homeowners with large lawns, as well as for contractors, government entities and lawn care professionals. Offset wheels prevent tracking and soil compaction; three overlapping blades produce a smooth finish. “For people who have bought 5- and 6-acre plantation homes,” Bratt says, “Bush Hog finishing mowers give a nice, clean cut and make it easy to maintain a large piece of property.” The models are also in wide use at resorts, golf courses and horse farms.
