According to data from the IRZ ARiMR system, in the first two months of the year the number of pigs registered in Poland decreased by over 700,000. During this time, we lost over 1,000 herds of cattle.
According to data from the IRZ system of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture, as of February 29, there were 50,699 pig herds in our country, keeping a total of 8,873,183 pigs.
This means that since the beginning of the year, 1,099 pig herds have disappeared from the map of Poland, which means a decrease of 2.1%. The pig population decreased by over 700,000 during this time. pigs (decrease by 7.4%).
During this time, the average size of the pig herd decreased by 10 animals and at the end of February amounted to 175 animals.
The number of pig herds has been decreasing for years
This is a continuation of a trend observed for at least a dozen years. Let us remember: 10 years ago, almost 180,000 people were engaged in pig breeding in Poland. farms. Five years later, this number was almost 60,000 more. lower. Perhaps the biggest decline was observed in 2021, when we lost over 30,000 in the space of 12 months. hence. Last year, the trend of herd liquidation continued, but its dynamics was no longer as severe as before: in 2023, the total number of pig herds decreased by approximately 4.5 thousand.

Obligation to census the pig herd
Perhaps the explanation for this state of affairs is the fact that breeders are obliged to prepare a census of their pig herds by the end of the year. It is possible that breeders who had not previously updated the population in the ARiMR database (although they are obliged to do so) only indicated the actual herd size at the end of the year. This would explain such a large population decline. However, this is only our assumption and we do not guarantee in any way that this was the case.
